During your five- day safari, you will visit Virunga National Park, one of Africa’s largest and oldest National parks located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This park is renowned for the wide range of trekking options it offers, including the chance to observe critically endangered mountain gorillas and a number of volcanoes, the most fascinating of which is Nyiragongo. You will have the opportunity to travel mountain gorillas in their native habitat and hike the active volcano Nyiragongo.
Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Gisenyi after arriving at Kigali international airport
A driver from Adventure in the Wild Safaris will meet you at the Kigali international airport and take you to Gisenyi town, one of the biggest cities along the beaches of Lake Kivu. You will have a boat ride on Lake Kivu in the afternoon while seeing the Nyiragongo volcano, and then you will be taken to Virunga National Park. Dinner and a night’s rest.

Day 2: tracking gorillas in the Virunga
You will get up early, eat breakfast, and then be driven by your driver to Bukima patrol where you will register and receive a training on going on a gorilla trek. As many gorilla treks in the Virunga National Park begin in Bukima, be prepared to run into other trekkers before beginning your journey. Mountain gorillas will be found after a 1- to 3-hour journey, and you will be permitted to spend an hour with them watching them go about their daily lives, including nursing the infants and other tasks. After that, you’ll return to your lodge for lunch before engaging in some bird watching in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Hiking Nyiragongo
You will be escorted to the park headquarters after your early-morning meal for registration and a briefing on the Nyiragongo hike. The hike will then begin at the Kibati ranger station, which is located at an elevation of 1870 meters above sea level. As you begin your walk, the lower slopes are covered with a beautiful rain forest that is home to a variety of birds, animals, and primates. You’ll notice that there is less foliage as you climb higher. Depending on the hikers’ speed and physical condition, the walk will last 5 to 6 hours. You will be rewarded at the summit with amazing views of the erupting magma from the crusted lava, where you can also take some pictures. a night spent at the crater.

Day 4: Descend Nyiragongo
You’ll begin your descent from the summit of the volcano to the bottom in the morning after eating breakfast that has been cooked by the porters, which will take less time than climbing. Then, your driver will pick you up and take you to your hotel. You have the option of unwinding or experiencing tremendous cultural diversity at the Kibumba market. Dinner and a night’s rest.

Day 5: Transfer back to Kigali
You’ll get up, eat an amazing breakfast, and then head back to Kigali. You will go on a city tour of Kigali and stop at the genocide memorial site and Kaplaki crafts village, which contains a variety of handicrafts. Following that, your driver will transport you to your lodging or the airport in time for your trip.
